Dear Friends and Community Supporters,
Since its inception in 2001, the Annual Port of San Diego’s Big Bay Boom has enthralled audiences with its awe-inspiring fireworks display on July 4th. However, its significance extends far beyond mere entertainment. This event is a powerful force for good. The net proceeds generated from this extravaganza are dedicated to supporting the Armed Services YMCA San Diego (ASY San Diego), a 501c3 non-profit nonprofit organization committed to strengthening and uplifting military families. We humbly appeal to you for assistance in preserving the enchantment of the Big Bay Boom while making a positive impact on the lives of our active-duty families.
Throughout its history, the Big Bay Boom has consistently contributed over $50,000 annually to ASY San Diego. These funds have been instrumental in providing essential support and enrichment to active duty service members and their families. Providing vital resources such as healthy food, community connection, and access to employment and education resources. We have provided military family bonding, youth development, and respite programs that support military children and families to learn coping techniques and strengthen communication. Our therapeutic programs at Horse of the Sun Ranch offer much-needed respite and recreation towards decreased stress and deeper family connections. We also contribute to the health and wellness of the wounded, injured, and ill population with recreation therapy, ward visits, and emergency basic needs support at Naval Medical Center San Diego.
None of this vital work would be possible without the support of our San Diego community. Each year, the Big Bay Boom brings our community together, offering a fresh and entertaining pyrotechnics show to commemorate the birth of our nation. While leaving viewers in awe, this event also generates a substantial annual economic impact of at least $74.4 million for our local economy. However, sustaining and improving this breathtaking show relies on the generous contributions and sponsorships from individuals, foundations, trusts, government entities, and businesses.
Covering the costs of a bigger and better show can be challenging, as pyrotechnics representing only 57% as a portion of the overall expenses. Other necessary expenditures include barges, tugs, safety measures, environmental monitoring, permits, publicity, and more. However, what truly matters is that the more support we receive, the greater impact we can have on local military families in need.
Your contribution, regardless of its size, will ensure the continuity of the Big Bay Boom, an event that profoundly affects all members of our community, particularly our junior enlisted population. We express our heartfelt gratitude for your support in preserving this cherished tradition for years to come.
Many thanks for helping this tradition to continue,
Frank Martin
